Activity of the Tourism Industry Leaders in the Light of the Present Tendencies of the Market (Case Study of First Choice and Forte)
The article presents basic problems connected with the organisation and activity of the modern tourist market and also shows the role of the great international companies operating in this market. The globalisation of the operating, concentration of capital and the blurring of the borders in tourist activity have appeared on an unprecedented scale, becoming one of the most typical features of the world economy at the end of the twentieth century. These tendencies on the large scale appear also in the tourist market which is dominated by the great international companies operating according to global principles. Having a great potential those companies have managed to master the tourist market and transformed it into the most developed and modern branch of the world industry.
Changing economic, social, political and technological conditions implemented some transformations in the operations of the tourist market leaders. They have to adjust to changing tourist demand and still growing competition. The article presents the process of restructuring in the two leading British firms operating in the tourist market. First Choice is the fourth in size tour operator in Europe. Similar in size is the hotel chain Forte. These firms, which are leaders in their branches point to the direction of the changes in the tourist market which will occur in the coming years and then in the twenty-first century. The experience of these firms also show that restructuring in some cases does not always lead to success.
