The Travel and Tourism Field at the University of Luton in Great Britain

The article deals with the problem of staff education for the British tourism industry, giving the University of Luton as an example. Tourism industry in the UK is estimated to generate around 5% of the national economy and sustains the employment of some 1.5 milion people. Therefore during the past decade the number of tourism courses in the United Kingdom has developed. Especially there is a rapid expansion of degree courses. The University of Luton is one of England's newest and liveliest educational establishments. It has a pioneering approach to education and offers one of the most comprehensive Modular Degree Schemes in the country. This enables students to create programmes of study which draw upon their strengths and meet the needs of their future careers. The University of Luton has close links with major employers both locally and nationally, thus it has a strong vocational focus. The Travel and Tourism Field at the University of Luton is placed within The Business Faculty. The article describes both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It shows modules studied at every level and also the rules for assesment of students' achievements. It is essential that students develop a clear understanding of the general business environment, and the course at the University of Luton provides a broad overview of business as well as detailed study of the tourism and travel areas. At present in Poland there is a great need for changes in the educational system in the field of travel and tourism, in order to reach European standards. For that reason introducing some solutions and experiences from European educational institutions would be very helpful.
