Changes in the Bieszczady Settlement Network (A Contribution to the Tourism Infrastructure in the Bieszczady Region)
This paper is a contribution to the discussion about the tourism infrastructure in the Bieszczady region (including the conception of building the climatic station). The results of The National Public Registers from years1970, 1978 and 1988 have been used, whereas the data from the Population Register from year 1900 have been treated as the comparative material. Between 1900 and 1988 the population living in the Bieszczady region decreased by nearly a half (to 52,1 thousand) and the number of points in the settlement network decreased by 1/5 (to 131 settlements out of which a half had less than 200 inhabitants). There are 30 uninhabited settlements in the area under investigation. 129 villages have been taken into consideration; in 69 the number of inhabitants increased between 1970 and 1988, in 42 out of these 69 — by not more than 25%. Only in six settlements the population at least doubled. The values of social infrastructure are very disadvantageous. The results of break down in the socialized employment are, from the point of view cf social costs, very severe for the inhabitants of the investigated region. The management restructuraiization should lay emphasis on the development of tourism, sanatorium and curative functions of the Bieszczady region.
