Fortress in Srebrna Góra as a tourist destination

Fortress in Srebrna Góra, an eighteenth-century complex of forts and other buildings for military purposes, is located in a mountainous region of the Sudety. Few years ago, as a unique in European scale masterpiece of military architecture, it was put on the list of monuments of history. In 2005 the research upon the tourist traffic and the popularity of fortress was carried out with the help of special questionnaire. From the scientists' viewpoint the results of the research would help to recognize the role played by the fortress as a tourist attraction and as a source of incomes for the local community. Among the respondents there were only 30 citizens of Srebrna Góra, the others came from Pomorze (25 persons) and Mazury (15 persons). The results were quite amazing. Even though 64.28% of respondents pointed out recreational, cultural and scenic values of the fortress, 19.02% of them would not recommend it as a worth a visit place. Almost nobody pointed out architectural and picturesque values of this unique place. These statements lead the authors of the article to conclusion that the fortress is in such a state that it demands not only complex renovation but also carefully planned advertising campaign as soon as possible. Keywords: fortress, fort, sightseeing values, tourism, cultural heritage, monument of history
