Review of selected problems of tourism development including tourism studies in the beginning of the twenty-first century

This article presents selected problems of tourism development that have been discussed during the Fifth International Academy Symposium on Tourism organized in Malaysia in 1997. One of the main topics featured a debate on the application of theoretical concepts and emphasis of credibility and complementarity in scientific research. The article describes three important aspect of contemporary tourism research: casino growth and tourism development, sustainable tourism development and its impact on the environment, and tourism development as a strategy in protection of heritage resources. A separate issue deals with posing the right questions in scientific publications.
