Mass Tourism in the Ojcow National Park
The Ojcow National Park (OPN) is the smallest of the 23 national parks in Poland but is extremely popular with tourists because of its history and natural beauty. The valley of the Pra_dnik river has interested visitors since the second half of the 18th century. Most of the tourist traffic is concentrated in the Pr^dnik Valley (Zamkowy Park in Ojcow, Brama Krakowska, Pieskowa Skala) and in the region of the Lokietek Cave (Fig. 1). Annually, the Park has about 400 thousand visitors. The increasing car traffic has become a serious problem, especially annoying during holidays. The number of cars coming to the OPN is growing, with approximately 20 thousand vehicles parking here annually (Table 1).
The forms of tourism which have developed over the last forty years cause grave problems, particularly the car traffic, the excessive number of tourists on certain days of the year and the way the Park is visited. One of the most urgent matters at the moment is the building of a circular road which would change the organization of traffic in and around the OPN. Unfortunately this calls for co-ordinated action at both the local (voivodeship) and central level.
