The Analysis of the Employment and Qualifications of Tourism Personnel in Krakow

The article presents the results of the research commissioned by the Vo-ivodship Office into the employment and qualifications of personnel employed in the tourism industry in Krakow. The findings are preceded by the description of the world tourism employment market and the situation in Poland. It has been estimated that the tourism industry in Krakow employs about 26,000 people, which is about 8% of the total number of people employed in the city. The research shows that the industry employs mainly women workers, and that the employees, maale or female, are principally young people. Tourism personnel is relatively well-educated, with 20% of the employees having higher education degrees. However,the employers have assessed the quality of their work as only moderately successful. The findings indicate that the main problem is that over 50% of those employed in the industry have no I knowledge of foreign languages. Most people working in tourist units have ad- I ditional qualifications proved by certificates of a foreign tour operator or tourist informer. The poor command of languages, the lack of job experience and tourism knowledge have been the most frequent causes of dissatisfaction with the gra-duates'preparation for the work in tourism.
