Some Philosophical and Social Aspects of Tourism

This work tries to reflect upon the phenomenon of travelling. The author consideres rambling from the point of view of some philosophical convictions of A. Camus, M. Scheler and C. Levi Strauss - ethnologist, and Yi Fu Tuan - geographer and humanist. The paper also includes the authors' own considerations, mainly those concerning genesis of tramping and its readiness to fulfil social roles. The work touches the problem of existential sources of travelling and its axiologic context (vitalism - utilitarianism). A very important issue of this work is a negative transformation of travelling into commodity and in consequence disturbances of cognitive and axiologic orientation of man. (Interpretation from the point of view of conservatism of values.) The work consideres western but mostly American social peculiarity.
